What is the Cloud?

The cloud is the Internet—more specifically, it's all of the things you can access remotely over the Internet. When something is in the cloud, it means it is stored on servers on the Internet instead of on your computer. It lets you access your calendar, email, files, and more from any computer that has an Internet connection.   The cloud can also be used to host your servers, e-mail systems and applications.

Why use the Cloud?

There are many reasons to use the cloud, but the main reasons are convenience and reliability. Saving a file to the cloud ensures that you'll be able to access it with any computer that has an Internet connection, so you won't need to worry about using CD-ROMs or USB flash drives. The cloud also makes it much easier to share a file with coworkers and friends.

For businesses, the reasons include:
  • Reduced Cost - Using the cloud over physical servers can save a significant amount of money - and all of the upfront costs. Cloud providers use large, modern data centers with green features and share infrastructure among multiple companies, their costs to run the small part of the center you’re using is much smaller than your costs would be for a server that's likely under-utilized in your office.  Hardware maintenance contracts are eliminated.
  • Ease of Use - Accessing Applications, saving and accessing files on the cloud is easy, making it an attractive option, even for non-technical small business owners.
  • Flexibility - The cloud, and the way you use it, can grow and change as your business needs grow and change.  Your business can scale up or scale down your operation and storage needs quickly to suit your situation, allowing flexibility as your needs change. Rather than purchasing and installing expensive upgrades yourself, your cloud computer service provider can handle this for you. Using the cloud frees up your time so you can get on with running your business.
  • Automation - Instead of having to invest in IT support to keep your servers updated and maintained, most applications that use the cloud automatically update themselves.
  • Mobile Working - One of the great benefits of technology is the ability for small business owners to create fully functional mobile offices. The Cloud fits in perfectly with this because it allows you to access and sync your data from wherever you are, essentially allowing you to take your office with you on the road.
  • Data Backup - Backing up your data so you don't lose everything in the case of a systems failure or other disaster is critical. The cloud not only simplifies the process by allowing your data to automatically update as you work, but it also creates copies of your data off-site where it will be safe from any local natural disaster, theft or malfunction.
  • Business Continuity - Protecting your data and systems is an important part of business continuity planning. Whether you experience a natural disaster, power failure or other crisis, having your data stored in the cloud ensures it is backed up and protected in a secure and safe location. Being able to access your data again quickly allows you to conduct business as usual, minimizing any downtime and loss of productivity.
